《日出·印象》描绘的是勒阿弗尔港一个多雾的早晨，晨曦笼罩下的海水呈现出橙黄色或淡紫色，天空被各种色块渲染，再现强烈的大气反光中形成的表面的色彩。这种对绘画语言本身的探索为后世许多画家所接受，从而形成了以印象派为起源的大潮流，艺术踏上了迈入现代的旅程。
